Marriage registration in Delhi

If your marriage has already taken place — through a religious ceremony or otherwise — registering it gives you an official marriage certificate, which is needed for passports, visas and many other purposes.

What is marriage registration?

Marriage registration is the process of officially recording a marriage that has already been performed — whether through a religious ceremony (Hindu, Arya Samaj, Nikah, church wedding, etc.) or a civil ceremony — so that a marriage certificate can be issued. This is different from court marriage, which solemnises the marriage itself.

Why couples register a marriage

Passport & visa

Many passport and visa applications require a marriage certificate as supporting proof.

Legal recognition

A registered marriage is easier to prove in property, insurance, banking and legal matters.

Name & address changes

Official documents often require a marriage certificate to process a name or address update.

Which law applies

Registration can generally proceed under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (for Hindu, Buddhist, Jain or Sikh marriages) or the Special Marriage Act, 1954 (for civil registration regardless of religion, or inter-religion couples). We confirm which route fits your situation before filing.

Documents typically required

Age & identity proof
For both spouses.
Address proof
For both spouses, matching the district of application.
Marriage photographs
Photographs from the wedding ceremony, where held.
Invitation card or affidavit
Wedding invitation, or an affidavit where a card is unavailable.
Witnesses
Typically two to three witnesses to the marriage.

If any of these documents are missing — a lost invitation card, for example — there are usually still valid ways forward; ask us about your specific case.

How the process generally works

Application

An application for registration is filed with the appropriate Registrar, along with supporting documents.

Verification

The Registrar's office verifies the documents and may schedule an appearance for both spouses and witnesses.

Appearance

Both spouses and witnesses typically appear before the Registrar to confirm the marriage.

Certificate issued

Once approved, the marriage certificate is issued.

Questions about marriage registration

Can I register a marriage that happened years ago?

Yes, delayed registration is generally possible, though the office may ask for additional supporting evidence given the gap. We can advise on what to prepare.

What if I've lost my wedding invitation card?

An affidavit or alternative evidence can often substitute for a missing invitation card — ask us about the specific requirement at your registration office.

Do I need a marriage certificate for a passport?

Passport applications commonly ask for a marriage certificate if your marital status or surname has changed. See our NRI services page if the certificate is needed abroad.
